Reflection what I have learned in class- 19/10/2013

Reflection what I have learned in class

English is the main language used in communication localwide, nationwide and worldwide. If you can speak or use English as well as the native speakers, you can communicate with several nationalities and countries. In school, students usually are taught by teachers, but not focused on learning by doing. In addition, Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is teaching strategy used for focusing on using English as first. It also is used couple with other teaching strategies such as task-based learning, content-based learning, problem-based learning, etc. In this section, I would like to talk about what I have learned in class. There were ten people who were teaching for today.

History about educational system in Singapore is focused on quantity to qualityFor good point, a teacher entertained students by playing video named “Song of Unity.” She allowed them to work in group for summarizing content and presented their idea about what they have read in front of class. However, she often offered only group work, so students rarely did the individual task. Moreover, she used language as fair, so she should practice how to speak English more and more. After gaining knowledge about history of educational system in Singapore, we will know about how to write a postcard.
A postcard is written paper used for sending impression about special places. A teacher showed video presented the ASEAN community (Peace, Prosperity and People). Students had participation in several activities, including the whole class activities, group work and individual work. On other hand, some students are hardly to understand exercise I, because the teacher described how to play game unclearly. In presentation, she could give examples of phrases used for greeting, ending of a postcard and how to write receiver’s address or gave clear examples. Next, we wound travel around Singapore again.

Tourist Attractions of Singapore are attractive to travelers. A teacher showed interesting video those students were interested in there. She guided them to know new vocabularies by showing picture cards couple with slide show on the power point. So, students could see picture cards very clearly. She allowed students to listen to sound twice and completed some gaps within worksheet. After that, students presented in pair as the role-playing. In my opinion, she should focus on listening than other skills, so students did several activities based on listening. Let’s gain knowledge about asking and bargaining prices.

Asking and bargaining prices is important when we would like to buy things or use services. A teacher showed video about asking prices at shop department. She allowed students to work in group for matching picture cards appropriate with word cards about Singapore currency. It was so interesting game that students interested in. However, she should read this word from “brunch” to “bunch.” In addition, she usually added “s” to this word “dollar.” In fact, dollar is uncountable noun used without completing “s.” In good point, students could pay attention in class for creating new conversation about asking and bargaining and they are evaluated by testing the role-playing with pair next week. Then, we could ask and bargain things or services they needed at Singapore, we would like to buy souvenir imported from Vietnam.

There were five identity of Vietnamese souvenirs such as Gouc- Moc, Non-La, sand picture, etc. A teacher enhanced students to know what they are going to learn for today by showing video about asking prices. In good point, she taught vocabularies about Vietnamese souvenirs with voice of the native speaker twice. After that, students were taught to know the structure and allowed students for listening to conversation twice, too. Students answered some questions according to listen to the conversation. For example, how many things did you hear in this conversation? Students got 1 score from answering a question correctly. In addition, students are given opportunity to converse in pair to practice speaking. In my opinion, I think she should control classroom more, because some students talked with other loudly during class. Do you know how to do the flight reservation? We returned to Singapore once more time to enjoy with tourist attractions.

People would like to go aboard to see beautiful tourist attraction, especially Singapore. A teacher chose the interesting topic related to content about the AEASN community. She focused on doing flight reservation. She showed video and asked students some questions. Students could have participation in game named “What is my mind?” According to how  to play game, everyone got a picture card and they have to find the one who held a word card related to the picture card. It is good activity, because students could move body. However, the teacher should tell students to use English. For instance, students may ask, who had picture card or word card about a passport? I do agree with the topic chose by him, because it was used in the real life situation at this present. Therefore, he used several authentic materials such as two videos, brochure, and how to teach students for doing flight reservation online. Students could do it when they would like to go aboard. We have to spend money for doing flight reservation, we should know about currency.

Malaysian Ringgit is official currency of Malaysia. A teacher showed video about Malaysia and students were asked some questions. For example, how many countries are belonged to the ASEAN community? “Which one would you like to go?” For good point, students had learned vocabularies couple with the native speaker’s voice. She also compared Malaysian Ringgit to Thai Baht, so students could know the exchange rate converting from Malaysia. What she should develop is directions for doing game using sticks. In addition, she sometimes cannot control class. Do you know how to read by scanning strategy?

Scanning reading was used for finding specific information. A teacher focused on teaching about flag of ten countries in the ASEAN community. She prepared the board shown information that described about flag. Students work in pair and glued flag picture appropriate with information of it. She showed the power point as game named “what is this country?” Students had to read information loudly, find key phrase and told what this country is. In my opinion, overall, she could continue class very well. However, she should be careful for saying polite word with students, and avoided say “Stop your mouth.” She should say “Be quiet please.” Therefore, she did not use easy words and tell how to pronounce difficult words. She should brief the long content to short, clear and concise. After we could read the passage by scanning, we would like to use knowledge to write a postcard to our family, friends, or the others.

Writing a postcard was good way for telling our impression about places. A teacher guides students to know how to write a postcard sent from Malaysia. In good point, she taught students to know vocabularies about tourist attractions in Malaysia. She also reviewed them again by covering words. She showed the authentic material such as postcards imported from Singapore and Malaysia. Then, she taught how to write a postcard, she showed a clear example of the written postcard to students. She told what on the top of the postcard is, greeting, details, ending of postcard, name of sender, name and address of receiver. Students could write it after finished class certainly. In addition, she focused on communicative language teaching couple with task-based learning, because students could write a postcard and send it to someone. The teacher really sent it to post office. After that, students had to send the received postcard to teacher again for getting point. Next chapter let us know about countries and nationalities.

There were ten countries and nationalities within the ASEAN community. A teacher taught students to know vocabularies showing within the table that is easy to see and understand. He still lost confidence during class, so he should breathe in and out. He should check correct word “Philippine” to “The Philippines.” Brunei should be used full name “Brunei Darussalam.” In good point, he could teach each step as good. Students could use the structure to the real life situation, because it is easy to use. For instance, “what is the capital city of (country)?” “Where are you from?” and “What is your nationality?” The teacher gave students homework to find a famous person by using three questions. They changed pronunciation in the first question from you to she/he and changed the second and third questions from possessive adjectives “your” to “her/his.”

In conclusion, creative teaching was helpful to produce good learning outcome. According to this essay, communicative language teaching is the most important strategy used for focusing on English application. It also was used couple with other strategies. In this section, there was teaching about regional lesson plan based on the ASEAN community. Currency, tourist attractions, flags, countries, nationalities, souvenirs and others were examples. Each teacher applied information about the ASEAN community to several functions such as asking and bargaining prices, doing flight reservation, asking about exchange rate, countries and nationalities and writing a postcard, etc. In my opinion, students could use knowledge gained in class into their life situations such as airports, shops, and other places. English was easy for everyone.
